What Does End of Support Actually Mean?
When Microsoft, Apple, or any other software vendor announces end of support for a product, it means they will stop releasing security updates, bug fixes, and official technical assistance. From that point on, any vulnerability discovered in that software remains permanently unpatched, turning it into an open door for cybercriminals.
Microsoft recently issued a direct warning to IT decision-makers: end-of-support systems are not just a technical inconvenience — they are an active security liability. For small businesses and freelancers, the consequences can be severe: data loss, business downtime, GDPR non-compliance fines, and lasting reputational damage.
Which Products Are Already Out of Support or Approaching End of Life?
Here are some of the most commonly used systems in small businesses that have already reached or are approaching end of support:
- Windows 10: end of support on October 14, 2025. If your machines are still running Windows 10 without upgrading to Windows 11, they are no longer receiving security patches — right now, today.
- Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10: Microsoft has confirmed that Office 365 apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) will stop receiving feature and security updates when running on Windows 10 after October 2025.
- Windows Server 2012 / 2012 R2: extended support ended in October 2023. Many small businesses still run these servers without any security updates.
- Exchange Server 2016: end of support in October 2025. If you manage your own on-premises mail server, this is critical.
- PHP versions below 8.2: many WordPress sites run by freelancers and small businesses still rely on PHP versions that no longer receive active support.
Why Is Running End-of-Support Software So Dangerous?
